THE GLOBALIZATION OF THE DALIT PROBLEM

Transformed by Education
Sheshmani is a nine-year-old boy from a low caste Hindu background who has been studying at one of OM India's Dalit Education Centre for several years.

The teachers have seen a transformation in Sheshmani's life.  His family is poor, so initially, he did not know how to dress properly, take a bath or behave in class.  However, after some time, the teachers worked with him to teach him about hygiene, how to pay attention in class and how to have a good attitude.  Today he can hold a pencil and write, and he has really advanced in personal hygiene.  The teachers say that Sheshmani is a hard worker and is dedicated to his education.  He travels six kilometres every morning to come to school.

He is learning that he should not lie and he should not steal.  One day, Sheshmani saw some fruit in a tree that looked tasty.  He thought about taking the fruit as a snack.  However, he realized that it was not his
fruit.  He remembered from his lessons in school that he should not take things that do not belong to him.  Therefore, he quickly left the scene and returned home.  The teachers were so proud of Sheshmani when he told them that story.
