Archbishop Nathan Söderblom (1866-1931), who as a young Swedish Lutheran, attending a Student Conference at Northfield, Connecticut, in 1891, wrote in his diary,

 

"Lord, give me humility and wisdom to serve the great cause of the free unity of Thy church."

Henry P. Van Dusen has been a leader in the ecumenical movement and a witness to the "axioms" of its history which he describes. Educated at Princeton University, the University of Edinburgh, and Union Theological Seminary in New York, he taught for many years at Union and served as its President for eighteen years until 1963.
